Background & Objective

The challenge or opportunity you are trying to address for the organization.

Social isolation among older adults is a growing public health concern, often described as an epidemic with emotional and physical consequences. Homebound seniors and elder residents of assisted living facilities—especially those without regular family visits—are especially vulnerable to loneliness.

Learning Objectives

This is what students will learn as they complete the case.

This case challenges students to design a community-driven initiative that addresses social isolation through empathy, creativity, and operational execution. It requires integrating human-centered design with scalable logistics and volunteer engagement to create meaningful intergenerational connections. Students will develop a campaign that not only delivers tangible items, but also fosters dignity, emotional support, and sustained community involvement.
  •  Analyze the causes and impacts of senior isolation to identify meaningful intervention opportunities
  •  Evaluate how intergenerational programs can improve emotional well-being and community connection
  •  Design culturally inclusive and emotionally resonant card and care package prototypes
  •  Develop messaging frameworks that are respectful, adaptable, and appropriate across diverse identities and backgrounds
  •  Design a volunteer engagement strategy that motivates participation across schools, faith groups, and community organizations
  •  Develop an operational plan for sourcing, packaging, and delivering care items safely and efficiently
  •  Assess ethical considerations when designing programs for vulnerable populations, including dignity, consent, and representation
  •  Synthesize creative design, logistics, and impact measurement into a scalable campaign model for ongoing community engagement
