Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity
Karlsgate is a privacy-enhancing technology company that enables organizations to safely use and collaborate with sensitive data. The company has successfully gained traction with large organizations across multiple industries, including global agencies, data providers, publishers, and multinational enterprises. However, Karlsgate faces a significant challenge in making the business value of its technology more recognizable to potential customers. The complex nature of data governance and privacy challenges often involves multiple stakeholders, making the buying process intricate and multifaceted.

The specific business challenge lies in creating scalable, cost-effective ways for prospective customers to engage with Karlsgate before entering a traditional sales process. The current impact of this challenge is that potential customers may not fully understand the value of Karlsgate's technology, leading to missed opportunities for market expansion and revenue growth. The company's growth is hindered by the difficulty in conveying its value proposition to diverse audiences, including privacy and compliance teams, technology teams, data teams, and business leaders.

This project addresses the challenge by engaging North Carolina A&T entrepreneurship students in identifying practical strategies for generating qualified market interest. Students will explore low-cost engagement models that provide immediate value to prospective customers, helping them recognize and understand the problems Karlsgate solves. The project will involve phases of market research, stakeholder analysis, competitive review, and strategy development, culminating in actionable recommendations for Karlsgate.

This project is ideal for students as it offers a real-world application of their academic learning in entrepreneurship and consulting. Students will gain valuable experience in strategic planning, market analysis, and business development, enhancing their consulting communication and teamwork skills. The project also provides an opportunity to explore the intersection of technology, data governance, and market engagement, making it relevant and exciting for students interested in careers in consulting, marketing, and technology.

Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
  1. Conduct market and customer research to identify and prioritize target customer segments, stakeholder personas, key pain points, and triggers that could create demand for Karlsgate.
  2. Evaluate how target audiences currently address data governance, privacy, and protected data collaboration challenges, including competitive solutions, alternative approaches, and common barriers to change.
  3. Research successful B2B engagement models used by companies selling complex or emerging technologies, with particular attention to free assessments, educational tools, interactive resources, and other low-cost approaches.
  4. Develop and compare potential market engagement concepts for Karlsgate, including the proposed Data Governance Readiness Analyzer and other alternatives that could provide immediate value to prospective customers.
  5. Recommend the strongest concept based on customer relevance, differentiation, ability to demonstrate Karlsgate’s value, scalability, and potential to generate qualified commercial interest.
  6. Develop the positioning, messaging, target audience, user experience, and customer journey for the recommended concept, including how it should connect to Karlsgate’s capabilities without becoming overly promotional.
  7. Recommend practical, low-cost strategies for launching and promoting the offering through targeted outreach, content, partnerships, and other appropriate channels, along with metrics for measuring engagement quality and commercial potential.
  8. Develop an actionable implementation roadmap and present final findings, recommendations, supporting research, and next steps to Karlsgate stakeholders.
Project Synopsis: Expected Results

Success would be a clear, evidence-based recommendation for a market engagement approach that Karlsgate can realistically implement to generate qualified interest in its technology.

Key measures of success would include:

  • Identification and prioritization of the customer segments and stakeholder personas most likely to engage with Karlsgate’s value proposition.
  • Validation of the problems, use cases, and triggers most likely to motivate those audiences to take action.
  • Evaluation of multiple free or low-cost engagement concepts, including the Data Governance Readiness Analyzer, with a clear rationale for the recommended approach.
  • A differentiated concept that provides meaningful standalone value to prospective users while naturally demonstrating the relevance of Karlsgate’s capabilities.
  • Clear positioning and messaging for the recommended offering that can be adapted to different stakeholder audiences.
  • A defined customer journey showing how an initial interaction with the offering could progress into a qualified commercial conversation.
  • A practical, low-cost strategy for launching, promoting, and testing the concept.
  • Defined metrics that Karlsgate can use to evaluate adoption, engagement quality, qualified interest, and commercial potential.
  • An actionable implementation roadmap that gives Karlsgate clear priorities and next steps following completion of the project.
A particularly successful outcome would be a recommendation that Karlsgate has enough confidence and supporting evidence to move forward with testing in the market.
